Masai Mara Walking Safari

A walking safari in Masai Mara is an exhilarating adventure that allows you to experience the wildlife in a more natural and intimate way. Unlike traditional safaris that rely on vehicles, a walking safari gives you the opportunity to explore the wilderness on foot, guided by experienced and knowledgeable Maasai guides.

There are two types of nature walks available in Masai Mara. Within the camp, you can take a leisurely stroll lasting approximately 45 minutes to an hour. These walks offer a chance to observe the local flora and fauna surrounding the camp, providing a peaceful and serene experience. The rates for these walks range from USD 30 to USD 50 per person.

For a more extensive walking safari, you can venture outside the main reserve. These walks typically last around 2 1/2 to 3 hours, covering a distance of 9 to 15 kilometers. Along the way, you will have the opportunity to spot a variety of wildlife and bird species. To ensure your energy levels are sustained, a packed breakfast or lunch is included, depending on the timing of the walk. Additionally, game drives are arranged to transport you to and from the walking safari location. The rates for these longer walks range from USD 90 to USD 150 per person.

To maximize your chances of encountering wildlife, it is recommended to schedule the walks during the early morning or late afternoon when the sun is not too hot. This allows for a more comfortable and enjoyable experience, as well as the opportunity to witness animals during their most active times.

While walking safaris are not permitted within the main Masai Mara National Reserve, private conservancies surrounding the reserve may offer supervised walking safaris. Even within the main reserve, some camps and lodges provide shorter nature walks within their immediate vicinity. These walks typically last around an hour and allow you to explore the surroundings of the safari property.

Participating in a walking safari provides a unique sensory experience. As you traverse the bush on foot, you become more attuned to the sights, sounds, and smells of the environment. This heightened awareness allows for a deeper connection with nature and a greater appreciation for the wildlife and landscapes of Masai Mara.

The guides who accompany you on these walks are not only experienced and trained, but also often local Maasai who possess an intimate knowledge of the region. Their expertise and familiarity with the area enhance the quality of your walking safari, as they can provide fascinating insights into the wildlife, culture, and history of Masai Mara.

It is important to note that although Masai Mara walking safaris are generally safe, there is still an element of risk involved. By venturing into the territory of wildlife on foot, you are placing yourself on the same level as animals such as elephants, buffalos, lions, leopards, and cheetahs. However, with well-planned and supervised walks, the risk is mitigated, and the rewards far outweigh any potential concerns.

A walking safari in Masai Mara offers a thrilling and immersive experience that allows you to connect with nature and wildlife on a deeper level. With expert guides, diverse wildlife sightings, and stunning landscapes, it is an adventure not to be missed for those seeking a more intimate and authentic safari experience.
